Start from where you’re at

A few days ago I was sitting with a friend, hearing her share her dreams of all she wanted to accomplish. In a moment, a look of defeat swept across her face. Tears in her eyes, she said to me, “Jane,  I have so many things I want to do, but I don’t know where to start. It’s all so overwhelming.”
” How about this”, I said “why don’t you start from where you are at?.”
A real deep insight, I know. But, it’s true.
So often we are waiting to start from somewhere else before we seek to accomplish what we want to do. We imagine this perfect place where all the puzzle pieces come together- and we can finally start living.  We say things like:” I’ll start dreaming once I’m wealthy, I’ll start dating once I’m healthy, I’ll start influencing once I’m educated” This “I’ll start some day” notion is nonsense.
In fact, this “I’ll start someday” is what I clung to, using this as an excuse to put off doing something that has been on my heart to do for years. You see, I have wanted to start writing for a very long time. Yet, I was held back because I believed I had to start from a different place than from where I was. I thought I had to be better before I could start. I thought I had to be more articulate, more well versed, more influential and more accomplished.  But, the truth is, we don’t get better unless we start. We can’t get to that someday, if we won’t step out right from where we are.
Once I understood this, I understood there was no better time to start writing than right now.
Right now, I don’t know much fancy talk, punctuation marks befuddle me and I find it difficult to express myself in words ( facial expressions and grunts work far more effectively, in my opinion). But, if I don’t start with what I have at this moment, how can I ever move on?
So, here I am. Here it is. Welcome to janehugo.com, a blog where I am starting with what I have, from where I am.
Limited vocabulary and poor sentence structure be damned.
