It’s time for an adjustment

I went to the Chiropractor the other day and found out that my body is out of whack.

You see, 5 years ago, I had a big fall and injured my left shoulder and upper back. I also developed a concussion. It took months for me to feel better from this tumble.

It wasn’t until I went to the Chiropractor that I learned some new information about how my body reacted to this injury.

As a result of my fall, my body overcompensated and realigned itself to protect my injured side. My spine had actually grown around the wound where I fell and there was now a curvature in my spine. I didn’t realize I was walking off balance until I was properly adjusted. While I had “healed”, I actually healed crooked due to overcompensation.

This got me thinking; how often does this happen?

Instead of growing through the hurt, we grow around the hurt and as a result we start growing off balance in a way we may not have intended.

This is can look like a number of things:

A teenager’s parents get divorced, so he hardens his heart and tells himself that marriage is a farce and he will never fall in love.

A young woman’s boyfriend cheated on her, so she becomes bitter towards men, believing they’re all unfaithful.

A person was given up for adoption as an infant, so he tells himself that he is inadequate and that everyone is going to eventually leave him.

A man was treated unjustly, so he becomes paranoid, thinking that the whole world is out to get him.

Life happens, we get hurt. It’s part of the human experience.

But if we don’t sit with our pain at the source, we run the risk of developing coping systems and beliefs around the wound that may throw us off kilter.

This can happen so subtly that we don’t even realize what is happening.  We make agreements with our pain and it alters how we move through life.

This experience allowed me to look at some hurts in my past, and what attitudes and agreements I had made from these experiences. I realized that I had developed some beliefs that stemmed from disappointment in my life. Not only was I out of balance physically, but there were some heart issues I had to deal with as well.

Sometime’s it’s hard to see our own crooked walk from beneath our nose. Sometimes a friend, loved one or professional can help us see the bent places that we cannot see with our own eyes.

So for you dear friend, is there an area of your life where you have grown slanted? Have you grown around the hurt and used bitterness and a cold heart as a way to deal?

Maybe, just maybe, it is time for an adjustment.
